On 7 December 1941 Japanese carrier-based aircraft attacked the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor sinking four battleships at their moorings (two of which would be re-floated and repaired for service) and damaging a further four. A further seven vessels were sunk or damaged alongside much of the infrastructure on the island of Oahu. They were the first losses sustained by the US Navy during the Second World War.
In a previous video an overview has been provided of the battleships and aircraft carriers lost during the course of the war. The following video provides an overview and visual record of the heavy cruisers and light cruisers of the US Navy lost during the course of the Second World War between 7 December 1941 and the end of the war on 2 September 1945 when the Japanese signed the instrument of surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri.
